As from the 4th October 2010 a new element was introduced into the driving test called independent driving. For approx 10 minutes of the test the examiner may ask you to follow road direction signs. For example "At the end of the road I would like you to turn right then follow the road signs to the hospital". He/she may show you a simple map with 4-5 directions on, or he/she may give you 4-5 verbal directions to follow instead of individual instructions. This new element is to give you a more realistic view of what it will be like when you have passed your test. But there is no need to worry you are still being assessed on your driving ability and not your ability to remember directions. If you go the wrong way you will not get a driving fault unless you make a driving error, and if you forget the instructions you may ask the examiner to repeat the directions. Along with this new element being introduced into the driving test, the Driving Standards Agency have decided they are no longer going to publish the test routes, and you will only be asked to perform one reversing manoeuvre instead of two.
